A co-pilot on an American Airlines plane died Wednesday while the plane was preparing for landing in New Mexico, The New York Daily News reported.

The report said the pilot announced a medical emergency over the plane’s intercom. WFAA reported that the co-pilot—William “Mike” Grubbs-- collapsed in the cockpit.

Flight 1353, a Boeing 737, landed safely in Albuquerque at about 3:30 p.m. local time.

Emergency personnel quickly boarded the plane and tried to revive the co-pilot for about 40 minutes.

“American Airlines is deeply saddened by the death of first officer William “Mike” Grubbs,” said a spokeswoman for the company said. “We’re taking care of first officer Grubbs family and colleagues and our thoughts and prayers are with them them during this time.”
