Near Miss

It turns out the hand grenade hurled at President Bush when he was visiting the former Soviet Republic of Georgia last week was live. It could have detonated, but it didn't. Imagine though, if it had.

Authorities say even if it exploded, a hundred feet from the president, he'd have survived, but scores of others would not.

I don't know about that. I do know this: The world would be a very different place this week had that happened last week. We'll never know. We only remember when terrorists succeed, not when they fail.

As New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has often said, the bad guys just need to get it right once. We, who fight them, have to get it right all the time.

So we quite rightly remember the times they succeed in places like New York or Madrid. But we barely stop and think of what's been avoided since in places like New York or Madrid.

Destruction catches our attention. Avoiding it does not.

I think we do a disservice to those who protect us when we forget they're always looking out for us.

They don't get a lot of praise. But, considering the stuff they stop, they're due at least a little thanks.
