Saddam Support Continues

By David Asman

As the casualties in Iraq mount, a fifth column of anti-U.S. sentiment continues to be stirred up in Europe by those who opposed our efforts to get rid of Saddam Hussein. Leading the charge is Tariq Ali (search), a columnist for the Guardian newspaper in London.

He recently wrote: "It is hoped that the invaders of Iraq [the U.S. led coalition] will eventually be harried out of the country by a growing national reaction to the occupation regime they install, and that their collaborators may meet the fate of former Iraqi prime minister Nuri Said before them.”

The Iraqi Prime Minister to whom Ali refers was overthrown and murdered, along with his supporters, in 1958. His relatively peaceful regime was followed by five years of bloody coups and in-house murders that led directly to the dictatorship of the Baath Party (search), eventually led by Saddam Hussein. Nowhere does Mr. Ali or other European opponents to coalition forces suggest that there’s anything wrong with the murderous cycle that led to Saddam Hussein.

In fact, in a column published today, Mr. Ali even proposes the establishment of an Iraqi National Liberation Front to fight the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

And that’s the Asman Observer.
