Rescuers Search for Person Who May Have Fallen Into Icy Lake Near Chicago

Published January 14, 2015

Divers in Illinois searched for a person who may have fallen into a frigid, icy lake Tuesday morning, but so far have found no one.

A man walking his dog along Sunrise Beach in Lake Bluff, Ill., near Chicago reportedly saw a person plunge into the ice-covered water, according to local media.

Divers combed Lake Bluff in a search-and-rescue effort, but were hampered by the extremely cold water and have found no signs of a victim, MyFOXChicago.com reported.

Some of the dive teams stopped their rescue attempt because of 36- to 38-degree lake temperatures. There were also fears they would be trapped among chunks of floating ice, the station said.

Sonar technology was used in the water rescue.

Lake Bluff is about 35 miles west of Chicago and just east of Lake Michigan.
