Report: UFC Star Died in Desert From Heat Exhaustion After Motorcycle Ran Out of Gas

Published January 13, 2015

The Ultimate Fighting champion whose body was found in the California desert appears to have died from heat exhaustion when his motorcycle ran out of gas.

Douglas Vincitorio, a member of Evan Tanner's management team at Driving Sports Force, told MMAWeekly.com that the 37-year-old fighter was on a "cleansing" excursion and set out on foot in the scorching heat after his bike lost steam.

"What we were told is that (sheriff's officials who found him) believe his motorcycle had run out of gas, so he went to walk out in, like, 115- to 118-degree heat," said Vincitorio. "He was miles away from his camp. That's where the helicopter found him. Right now, they just think that he succumbed to the heat."

Tanner was an Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight champion and a United States Wrestling Federation heavyweight champion. The UFC and Driving Force Sports had memorials to him on their Web sites Tuesday.

Tanner's body was found Monday in a remote area near the California-Arizona border. He'd vanished the previous week.
