And now some fresh pickings from the grapevine:
Howard Has Work To Do?
A new poll shows that when placed head to head in the key election state of New Hampshire, President Bush beats Democratic frontrunner Howard Dean by nearly a two to one margin, with 57 percent of New Hampshire voters saying they would vote for President Bush, and 30 percent saying they'd vote for Dean.
What's more, Dean does worse in the head to head challenge than a generic, unnamed Democrat, who wins 34 percent of the vote, and takes the president down to 51 percent.
Meal Matters
The Washington Post today says a report in the military newspaper Stars and Stripes is -- "blowing the whistle on President Bush's Thanksgiving visit to Baghdad, saying the cheering soldiers who met him were pre-screened and others showing up for a turkey dinner were turned away."
But the soldiers were screened for security reasons. And The Post waits until the end of its piece on the meal to mention that, according to one military official, soldiers were in fact not turned away for dinner.
You see, the president's meal was an added event. The dining hall was open for its originally scheduled Thanksgiving hours and stayed open five extra hours for the president. Soldiers who couldn't make it in during the president's meal were asked to come back later ... They chose not to return. But you'd have to read all of The Post piece to know that.
Pinning it on Prehistoric Man
As Democratic presidential candidates continue to pound the current administration for what they believe is its role in global warming, a new study says the real culprit is prehistoric man, who started global warming nearly 8000 years ago. University of Virginia Professor Bill Ruddiman says an analysis of air trapped in ancient ice shows that as humans began to clear forests, plant crops and raise livestock, atmospheric levels of greenhouse gasses began to rise. That then staved off what should have been a period of significant cooling.
Replacing a Culturally Offensive Mascot ...
Two years after dropping its Monty Montezuma mascot because some felt it was culturally offensive, San Diego State has now announced the adoption of a new mascot, Aztec Warrior ... which some Latino and Native American groups are condemning now as racist. The NAACP, quoted by the Los Angeles Times, calls it -- "inappropriate." Still, Aztec Warrior will make his debut this spring -- spear and all.
