Fighting for One Life

The Terri Schiavo case reminds me a lot of the case of Elian Gonzalez (search).

Remember that delightful little boy whose mother died on the raft trying to get him away from Castro’s Cuba (search)?

For months, our country was embroiled in a debate about one life and who should control that life. The question of legal guardianship came into play, and folks who normally agree with each other got into nasty fights about the rights of the Cuban father over the rights of the little boy. Of course, Elian was sent back to Cuba. The legal purists won that debate. Those who argued that Elian’s freedom was more important than the father’s legal rights lost.

No one knows who will win the fight over Terri Schiavo. But if this case proves anything, it’s how our country fights over every individual life in a way that no other country ever has or probably every will. And no matter which side of this debate you stand on, you have to agree that we’re lucky to live in a country where so many care so much about each living soul..

And that’s the Asman Observer.
