Doctors Remove Coconut-Sized Kidney Stone

Most kidney stones range in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball — but surgeons in Hungary said they removed one the size of a coconut Tuesday.

Sandor Sarkadi was rushed to the operating room at Kenez Gyula Hospital, about 150 miles east of Budapest, after a X-ray revealed that he was carrying a huge kidney stone.

It was 17 centimeters in diameter and weighed nearly 2.5 pounds, the Daily Mail reported.

Sarkadi is now recovering from surgery, according to the newspaper.

A kidney stone is a solid mass that forms in the kidney from substances in the urine, according to the National Institutes of Health. Most stones pass out of the body without incidence, but some kidney stones do not go away and may get stuck in the urinary tract. This can block the flow of urine and cause excruciating pain.

Symptoms include:

— Extreme pain in your back or side that will not go away;

— Blood in your urine;

— Fever and chills;

— Vomiting;

— A burning feeling when you urinate.
