Chronic Stress Can Lower Men's Testosterone Levels

A British doctor said the stress caused by the worsening economy may reduce a man’s testosterone levels, Agence France-Presse reported.

Dr. Richard Petty, the medical director of a health clinic in London said a man’s testosterone levels could drop due to chronic stress caused by financial worries, working longer hours and redundancy.

“When a man becomes grumpy or irritable, it’s easy to blame work or simply the effects of aging,” Petty said. “In the short-term, stress can increase the levels of testosterone and this is useful to help people respond quickly to pressures and new situations. But chronic stress, which is ongoing, is a major factor in the decline of testosterone.”

Testosterone, which is produced by the testicles, is linked to sexual function, memory, concentration and mood. When it becomes too low, a man can become lethargic, irritable and have a low sex drive.
