Man of Letters

Tony Sanchez, a Democratic candidate for Texas governor, recently wrote the Texas State Teachers Association, thanking it for endorsing his candidacy. The letterhead read, " Tony Sanchez for Gonernor."

The note also misspelled the organization's name. In addition the missive was laced with syntactical and grammatical howlers, such as a promise to have a "staff that work with children." Sanchez has made educational excellence the centerpiece of his campaign.

Mistakes Were Made Indeed

The Washington Post scorched the Bush administration earlier this week in an editorial titled, "Mistakes were Made." A closer reading of the piece, which blasted Pentagon accounts of civilian casualties in Afghanistan, reveals the headline was unintentionally apt. The screed misidentified Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as the Secretary of State.

Britain's Prince Philip — the man who once told a group of British students in China: "If you stay here much longer you'll all be slitty-eyed" — tried to charm a group of aborigines in Australia this weekend with this opening question: "Do you still throw spears at each other?"
