Always Hope for the Troops

Bob Hope's passing got me thinking about his tremendous, life-long work with the military. Whenever and wherever there was a conflict with U.S. troops involved, Hope was there. It was rare that during the holidays, Hope would be snuggled up with his family.

Instead, he was hunkered down in jungles or mountains of a distant outpost or battlefield. Hundreds of other stars and celebrities joined in his missions, which lifted the morale of millions of troops, just when they needed it most. To this day, actors and entertainers like Robin Williams, Gary Sinise, Drew Carey, and Sheryl Crowe have followed Hope's lead, visiting troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Then there are entertainers like Sean Penn and Barbra Streisand, who believe their views on a conflict deserve more attention than their unqualified support of our troops. Rather than using their celebrity charisma to raise the spirits of the troops, they more often undermine mission morale. This was not so with Bob Hope (search). He believed that no matter what his opinion, his views were always secondary to his support for Americans, who put their lives on the line for liberty.

That's the Asman Observer.
