Advanced Political Correctness

Electrical wiring is a tricky business, so electricians occasionally humanize the names of their equipment to make them easier to pick out. For example, the terms “male and “female” are often used to distinguish different kinds of wires and plugs. Computer mechanics do the same thing.

But one computer contractor recently got in trouble with the Los Angeles Internal Services Department (search) for referring to two different internal computer drives as the “master” and “slave.”

Internal Services felt that the use of the terms “Master” and “slave” was discriminatory to a certain sector of the Los Angeles community. Here’s part of the note received by the contractor: “The County of Los Angeles actively promotes and is committed to ensure a work environment that is free from any discriminatory influence be it actual or perceived… Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label.”

You can’t make this stuff up.

And that’s the Asman Observer!
