Fleet Admiral William “Bull” Halsey was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1882.

A 1904 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he was fleet commander in the South Pacific during World War II.

General Douglas MacArthur called Halsey "the greatest fighting admiral" of World War II. Promoted to the rank of Fleet Admiral in December 1945, Halsey retired from active duty in March 1947.

He died on 20 August 1959.

Paul McCartney mentioned Halsey in his 1971 hit song “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey.”
