U.K. community activists, top athletes and at least one war veteran are among 8,000 potential torchbearers for the 2012 London Games.
Some of those chosen were named Thursday at a ceremony in front of the iconic Tower of London.
The former Olympians and other community heroes have been nominated to run past landmarks and through remote islands across the length of Britain during a 70-day relay. The flame arrives in Land's End in Cornwall from Greece on May 18, 2012.
Human rights activists disrupted the international torch relay for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, prompting organizers to scale back the run. London's committee has created a homegrown affair for cities across the country.
