Spain appeals to Davis Cup over US surface choice

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

The Spanish tennis federation has appealed to Davis Cup organizers over the United States' choice of playing surface for the World Group quarterfinals.

Spain says the surface — better known as Hard Premiere — does not meet the International Tennis Federation requirements. The federation says the company that makes it is not included in the ITF's list of 91 approved manufacturers.

Spain captain Albert Costa says "it's a surface we are not familiar with because it doesn't meet regulations." His team hasn't been able to train on the surface ahead of the July 8-10 series in Austin, Texas.
