The New Jersey Nets finally caught a break -- an unfortunate one that could ruin their season.

The perennial bad-luck team lost its leading scorer, Brook Lopez, when the starting center suffered a stress fracture in his right foot Wednesday night.

He could be out for a couple of months.

Nets general manager Billy King announced Thursday that Lopez sustained the injury in a game against the Knicks on Wednesday and he will have surgery on Friday.

The injury is to the fifth metatarsal, the same type of injury that New York Giants first-round draft pick Prince Amukamara suffered on Aug. 6, early in training camp. He did not play in a game until Nov. 20.

Lopez averaged 20.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists last season as the Nets posted a 24-58 record. Johan Petro is his backup.
