NBA joins other leagues with cash for Haiti relief

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The NBA said on Friday it would give $1 million to relief efforts in Haiti, joining other professional leagues who offered funds after a massive earthquake devastated the nation earlier this week.

The National Basketball Association said in a statement it would partner UNICEF and other relief agencies to provide assistance to victims.

The Pan American Health Organization estimated the death toll from the earthquake could be 50,000 to 100,000, higher than previous figures from the Haitian Red Cross which estimated deaths at up to 50,000.

On Thursday, Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, the New York Yankees and seven-times Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong said they were pledging cash for relief in Haiti.
