Grenada's Kirani James edged American favorite LaShawn Merritt to win the men's 400 meters Tuesday at the track and field world championships.

Brazilian Fabiana Murer captured the women's pole vault with Germany's Martina Strutz placing second and Russia's Svetlana Feofanova taking third. American Jennifer Suhr was fourth.
