The gold medal hockey game last night in which Canada beat the U.S. 3-2 in overtime to dodge a national calamity certainly will be the defining moment of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, but it was the snow events that lead the charge to the United States hauling in a record 37 medals.
Germany held the previous record of 36 medals won at the 2002 Salt Lake Games. Skiers and boarders racked up 21 of the 37 U.S. medals.
The debate now isn't whether the U.S. Ski and Snowboard team had a successful Games (they rocked em), but which U.S. competitor wins best in show. Bouncing back from a disastrous 2006 Torino Olympics, Bode Miller racing under the radar for a change made a strong case by winning a full rainbow of medals: gold in the super combined, silver in the super G and bronze in the downhill.
Teammate Lindsey Vonn may not have lived up to the high expectations put on her and renamed the games the 2010 Vonncouver Olympics, but she did bring home the gold in the downhill and bronze in the Super G. Teammate Julia Mancuso matched her step for step with a silver in downhill and the super combined.
Vonn, 25, says she'll be around for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Miller, 32, almost retired last season, but with a hat-trick of medals in the 2010 Games, he stole the show at least for U.S. ski fans so it's never wise to count him out.
