Sen. Burris Faces $111G Mountain of Debt

Published December 24, 2015

Sen. Roland Burris, who campaigned furiously to replace President Obama in the Senate, is paying a steep price for it.

The Illinois Democrat's Chicago-based media consultant, Del Marie Cobb, confirmed to FOX News that Burris raised only $845 during the first quarter of this year and owes $111,000.

Cobb said Burris has not focused on any significant fundraising since being appointed to the seat by former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who is fighting charges that he offered Obama's Senate seat to the highest bidder, among other allegations.

Right now, fundraising "is not a concern for him" and he will "actively begin to fundraise when the time is right," Cobb said. He is "approaching the 2010 Senate race one step at a time."

Burris racked up $111,000 in debt by acquiring services during the period when he was appointed and fighting resistance from Senate leaders, Cobb said. That include fees for several Chicago-based media consultants and political advisers as well as extensive travel costs between Chicago and Washington.

Burris will raise the money necessary to pay off the debt, Cobb said.

FOX News' Marla Cichowski contributed to this report.
