Fox News confirms that former Alaska Republican Senator Ted Stevens died in a plane crash in southwest Alaska Monday night.
Ironically, Stevens had survived a different plane crash in 1978 in Anchorage, although his wife Ann did not.
This incident brings to mind other politicians involved in plane crashes, including another one in Alaska:
-Oct 1972: Alaska Rep Nick Begich (D), father of junior Alaska Sen. Mark Begich (D), presumed killed in plane crash in remote part of Alaska with late Majority Leader Hale Boggs (D-LA) ....plane never found.
-2002: U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone from Minnesota killed in crash of twin-engine turboprop 135 miles north of Minneapolis
-Oct. 16, 2000 - Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan, his son and an aide killed
-April 19, 1993: South Dakota Gov. George Mickelson in a rainstorm near Dubque, Iowa
-April 5, 1991 - Former Sen. John Tower near Brunswick, Ga.
-April 1, 1991 - Sen. John Heinz, R-Pa. in Merion, Pa. Aug. 7, 1989 - Rep. Mickey Leland, a Texas Democrat during a trip to inspect relief efforts in Ethiopia
-Sept. 1, 1983 - Rep. Larry McDonald, D-Ga., was killed when Korean Air Lines Flight 007 was shot down by a Russian fighter
-Oct. 16, 1972 - House Majority Leader Hale Boggs, D-La., and Rep. Nick Begich, D-Alaska, killed when their plane disappears over Alaska
-1935: U.S. Senator Bronson M. Cutting of New Mexico died in TWA-DC2 crash traveling from Albuquerque to Kansas
-1940: U.S. Senator Ernest Lundeen from Minnesota was killed in crash of DC-3 near Lovettsville, VA, during thunderstorm
