House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) believe Democrats will retain control of the House after the midterm elections.

And outsiders can tell, because they're both predicting they'll hold the same positions they have today.

"I fully expect to be Speaker of the House five weeks from now," said Pelosi.

"Whatever my concept in the future, I presume I will continue to be Majority Leader," said Hoyer during an address at the National Press Club.

But Hoyer was even more direct later during a conversation with reporters.

"We're going to keep the House," Hoyer said. "I think the base is getting more and more energized every day."

Hoyer argues that Democrats are "confident" and "well-organized," a remark that was echoed by Pelosi.

"I have great confidence in my candidates," Pelosi said. "They're doing just fine in their districts."

The 2010 midterm elections are shaping up as the most-contentious in 16 years. Republicans would have to win a net of 39 seats to retake the majority for the first time since 2006.
