Obama, Sarkozy Present United Front on Libya

(Deauville, France) The ongoing crisis in Libya remained a key element of talks that President Obama and fellow world leaders are having at the annual G8 summit in Deauville, France Friday.

After the president's bilateral meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the two expressed solidarity on the path forward in Libya.

"We agreed that we have made progress on our Libya campaign, but that meeting the U.N. mandate of civilian protection cannot be accomplished when [Muammar] Qaddafi remains in Libya directing his forces in acts of aggression against the Libyan people," President Obama said.

The French president was an eager participant and even a driver of the international mission to carry out air strikes against the Qaddafi regime and aid the people of Libya in their struggle against their longtime ruler.

But many weeks after the mission first began, Qaddafi still remains a factor. Mr. Obama said the coalition isn't wavering. "[W]e are joined in resolve to finish the job."
