Obama picks former Clinton lawyer Eggleston as new White House counsel

Veteran Washington attorney W. Neil Eggleston, who served in the Clinton administration, was named Monday as the White House’s top lawyer.

“Neil brings extraordinary expertise, credentials and experience to our team,” said President Obama in announcing the appointment.

Eggleston, a partner in the firm Kirkland & Ellis, replaces Kathryn Ruemmler, who is leaving after serving for three years as White House counsel.

“He has a passion for public service, is renowned for his conscientiousness and foresight, and I look forward to working closely with him in the coming years,” Obama said in making the announcement.

Eggleston is expected to start work in about three weeks.

He was an associate White House counsel in the Clinton administration and specializes in helping individuals and companies facing criminal, congressional and federal regulatory probes.

Eggleston graduated from Duke University and the Northwestern University School of Law.
