Tweet. Friend. Flick. Blog. Post. View. Click. The Obama administration opened its "virtual" doors to Americans across the country Friday and broke new "web" ground on seven different social networking sites."Technology has profoundly impacted how - and where - we all consume information and communicate with one another," said a statement from the White House's Office of New Media, "WhiteHouse.gov is an important part of the Administration's effort to use the internet to reach the public quickly and effectively - but it isn't the only place."

That's an understatement. The White House will now feed content to Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Flickr, Vimeo, itunes in addition to You Tube where it has been posting the President's weekly video address.

"There's a lot to talk about right now. From an economic crisis to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the President and his Administration have a full plate - not the least of which is making sure the public stays up-to-date and involved in our efforts," read the announcement on the Blog. Case in point, the first Tweet informed readers to go to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website, "Check out the CDC website to learn more about H1N1 flu (swine flu), as well as prevention tips," read the first White House Tweet.

The White House Blog will power most of the content to all these sites, but occasionally there will be exclusive material posted. For example, television cameras were not allowed to get video of the President shooting hoops with the champion University of Connecticut Huskies earlier this week, but the White House videographers got the footage and posted it to Vimeo, a video sharing site, trumping the traditional media coverage of such events.

Less than 6 hours old, the White House Facebook page had 47,648 people signed up.
