Labor Day was Monday. But as Congress prepares to return to Washington next week, House Democrats are flexing their labor muscles and making their case to blue collar voters.

"We don't have enough people working," lamented House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) as his party stands on the precipice of potentially losing control of both chambers of Congress. "But we are moving in the right direction."

Hoyer, Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-CA) and AFL-CIO leader Richard Trumka joined Hoyer Tuesday in advocating the Democrats "Make It in America" agenda.

"Jobs is job one," said Becerra. "Let them say that there are lots of Chicken Little's out there. But we will prevail."

Hoyer, Becerra and Trumka are touting a plan to restore manufacturing jobs by making products in the U.S. and selling them abroad.

Trumka reiterated his call from last week for Congress to tackle three bills which he believes would help American workers. Specifically, he cited an aviation reauthorization package, a nuclear power bill and infrastructure legislation.

"The only way to build a solid economy is to create jobs," Trumka said.
