Remembering Robert Sargent "Sarge" Shriver, Jr.

When Jack Kennedy announced the creation of the Peace Corps he turned it over to Sargent Shriver to implement. It became the greatest worldwide volunteer service vehicle for young people in America.

It took us to places that none of us had ever imagined being, facing unbelievable poverty. And being able to make a contribution that mattered -- that's something that will always remain with me.

And as I think about the Peace Corps I think about Sarge Shriver. There's a line they use in the Peace Corps: "the toughest job you'll ever love." And Sarge made it tough. But you couldn't help but love it.

His family dedicated themselves to service as well, as did his wife in a major way with the Special Olympics. If ever there was a family that was the epitome of service, it was Sarge's family. It's appropriate, in a way, that he would die literally within hours of Martin Luther King Day, a day which was dedicated to service.

He will be missed.
