Gretchen's Take: Politics driving Obama's foreign policy?

I don't know about you, but to me the Obama administration has never seemed to be that interested in foreign policy -- unless it was to push a political strategy.

First, trying to make good on a presidential promise to close gitmo -- by exchanging 5 Taliban commanders for the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

Second, the administration's fierce determination to make sure a nuclear deal with Iran happens. A deal that has already meant giving more credibility to an untrustworthy country than to even our allies -- Israel, Yemen and now Saudi Arabia as we watch the situation in the Middle East unravel more each day.

So, today, these questions must be asked. Is a nuclear deal with Iran for the president's legacy worth straining relationships with long time allies? Was releasing 5 Taliban commanders for Bowe Bergdahl -- with 3 of them already trying to return to terror -- worth it just to be able to fulfill a campaign promise to close Guantanamo Bay?

The president's number one charge is to keep America safe. Let's hope that will continue to outweigh any political strategy.
