Designer-to-the-stars Carmen Marc Valvo is famous for his luxurious evening wear, and his Fall 2011 show at New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week continued down that gilded path, featuring rich fabrics such as chiffon, tulle and organza . Did his background growing up in a Spanish/Italian family in Connecticut affect his work?

“The only thing I think I go back to over and over again is my love of lace,” says the designer, who has dressed Catherine Zeta-Jones and Eva Longoria, among others. “I walk away from it from time to time, but this season I’m totally embracing it again.”

Another upshot? “I do believe a woman has curves, and I like to flatter them, accentuate them and show them off,” he says. “I think that comes from my Latin background, definitely.”

At his runway show, Fox News Latino spoke to the designer about his favorite materials, his background, and finding inspiration in ballet.

The designer also spoke about his new book, “Dressed to Perfection: The Art of Dressing for Your Red Carpet Moments,” (Rizzoli), for which Katie Couric wrote the foreword. (Valvo is a cancer survivor, and the proceeds of the book go to the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance.)
