Once while cleaning up my apartment, I picked up a pair of my boyfriend’s shoes and realized they were unusually heavy. When I looked inside, I realized the insoles were at least three inches thick. From the outside, they looked completely normal.

‘Are these elevator shoes?’ I wondered.

Yes, they were.

I didn’t believe it at first so I tried them on. You know how it feels when you come across a text message or email that you're not supposed to see but can't help peeking at? That's what it felt like when I tried them on. After all, I wasn’t supposed to know about his height complex.

In his defense, I can stand at six feet tall with heels on. If I were him, I would probably feel short, too.

What was I supposed to do after learning his secret? Confront him about his insecurity? Poke some good-humored fun at him? Or do I pretend I never saw them? Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to that question.

At the end of the day, we all have our own insecurities. And if your guy wants a little height, he’s not alone. Some of the hottest stars in Hollywood, too, have lifted themselves up.

I imagine my response to finding his shoes would be similar to that of men who knew I was wearing Spanx. But why are Spanx so much easier to talk about? Is there a double standard when it comes to men wearing figure-changing apparel? Tell us what you think.
