Young Boy Beats the Odds

Published November 20, 2014

Fox News

A 7-year-old boy from South Wales, who has a genetic syndrome that is known to affect just seven in the world, has emerged from a sealed "bubble" and is seemingly cured, doctors say.

Rhys Harris spent two months in a bubble while doctors used chemotherapy to kill off his immune system, followed by a bone marrow transplant to give him a new one.

The boy was diagnosed at age 3 with a genetic mutation called NEMO, or Nuclear Factor Kappa B Essential Modulator mutation, which causes recurrent bacterial infections and abnormalities to the hair, teeth, nails, sweat glands, cranial-facial structure and other body parts.
