Dear Hank,
Sex rehab programs can range from 30 days to six weeks, during which time a person is stripped of all control and barred from sexual activity - and any turn-ons. He or she must avoid anything else that is addictive, and is expected to make a vow of abstinence for 90 days.
One's daily routine is strictly monitored and involves exercise, holistic activities, family visits, writing empathy letters and shame-reduction work (facing one's guilt and shame).
Rehab may involve_
-- A 12-step program, like that empowered by Alcoholics Anonymous; -- Medications for underlying issues, such as antidepressants for depression; -- Interpersonal therapy, where emotional baggage, mood disorders and the effects of past trauma are dealth with in an effort to increase self-control; -- Cognitive behavioral therapy, where the person learns to stop sexual thoughts by thinking about something else and substituting the behavior with another behavior; -- Education about health risks; -- Family support.
Ultimately, the person is being taught to take responsibility for his or her actions.
