Surgeons Remove Extra Limbs From Boy's Bottom

Published November 20, 2014

A 1-year-old boy underwent surgery Thursday to remove two extra limbs, the Times of India reported.

The boy named Vittal is recovering at Narayana Multi-Specialty Hospital after the six-hour operation.

Doctors say the extra limbs, which stemmed from Vittal’s buttocks, were part of a parasitic twin.

Although extra limbs are rare, it can be challenging to remove them.

"One of the biggest challenges is to find the aorta that supplies blood to this region," said Dr. Ashley D’Cruz, senior consultant pediatric surgeon and urologist at Narayana. "We need to cut it in a way to avoid huge blood loss. Moreover, vital parts of the baby including rectum, urethra and testis, are located in this area. They have to be protected."
