Jock itch can be an irritating—and embarrassing—problem for men.

We recently received this question from a viewer:

Dear Dr. Manny,
I've got a rash that I think is jock itch. What can I do to get rid of it quickly?
Thanks,
Barry

Well Barry, jock itch is a common fungal infection that affects the skin in your groin area. It is itchy and red, and usually appears as a ring-shaped rash.

You can usually avoid getting jock itch by making sure to keep the skin in your groin area clean and dry, but if you do happen to get hit with the itch, there are some things you can do.

  • Do your best to keep the affected area clean and free from moisture.
  • Avoid wearing thick clothing in warm weather.
  • Try wearing boxers to give the area some breathing room.
  • Use over-the-counter antifungal medications.

As a rule of thumb, always see your doctor to get an accurate diagnosis before attempting to treat yourself.
