Former Police Officer Fighting Deadly Disease and Eviction

A family in southern California is not only losing their father to a rare genetic disorder – they are also losing their home, MyFoxLA.com reported.

Michael Newton, a former police officer in West Covina in Los Angeles County, is suffering the end stages of leukodystrophy, which progressively destroys the brain.

Now, his wife Susan, who was laid off after completing chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer, and their four children are being evicted from their home. She told MyFoxLA.com that her husband’s medical retirement is not enough to save their home of 11 years – even after filing a loan modification.

Mortgage lender, JP Morgan Chase said they passed the Newton’s refinance case to Fannie Mae after the company said they had “problems with documents,” according to the report.

“From going to nothing, not having any information, thinking it’s in review, to that’s not my house anymore,” Susan said with tears in her eyes.

Newton’s friends are now stepping in to help. Scott Fahey, a retired police detective and friend of the family is trying to raise funds to help them save their home.
