Taron Pounds was lighting fireworks on July 7 at a family gathering when a mortar blew up in his face. The 22 year old suffered sever injuries to his face, eye, neck and chest, KOKH reported.

"I didn't even recognize my son," said Pounds' mom, Tammy Cauthron. "The entire left side of his face was blown off."

On Friday, Pounds underwent a 22-hour surgery where doctors used his fibula bone to start reconstructing his face. Doctors also used tissues and bones from other areas in the repair process.

"These doctors are giving him the chance at a normal life," Cauthron said.
