Boy proposes new law after dog dies

The death of a 12-year-old boy’s dog is helping to make a new law in the state of Kansas, fox4kc.com reported.

Aaron Coash’s dog, Nikko, a Shiba Inu, died recently after ingesting antifreeze, which kills 10,000 animals and more than 1,000 children each year, according to the news station.

So with the help of the Humane Society, Aaron is proposing a new law: Antifreeze needs to contain some sort of chemical that makes the sweet liquid taste bitter. Aaron would like to call it “Nikko’s Law.”

Kansas senator Carolyn McGinn called Aaron and said she will do what she can to get the law passed.

Dr. Mike Wasmer, a vet from the VCA Emergency Clinic in Mission, Kansas, said depending on the animal’s size, it doesn’t take much antifreeze to cause serious damage – and time can be the biggest factor as to whether or not the animal will survive.

“If they delay more than 4 to 6 hours, it’s very likely the damage has been done,” Wasmer said.
