If you reach for a sugary snack for that 3:30 pick-me-up while you're at work, you are probably setting yourself up for a crash before dinner.
Instead, consider choosing some protein to punch up your afternoon.
British researchers say it's protein, not sugar, that helps boost your alertness and also burns calories.
They compared how nutrients affect cells in the brain known as orexin cells.
Analysts say amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, stimulated these cells more than any other nutrients.
The team says these findings help explain why people seem to feel less calm and more alert after meals that are high in protein.
