Because no Academy Awards is complete without multiple appearances by Brad Pitt and a cameo by Sean Penn, The Tree of Life made it into the Best Picture nominations by virtue of its moderately byzantine, yet appealing, coming of age story. The main character's difficult relationship with his father, faith and all things that come with middle age are enough to drive a man to drink. In fact, a simple drink hearkening back to more innocent times seems to be exactly what the psychiatrist ordered. The Gin Rickey evokes lazy days on the beach and the summer sun, getting us all far away from the disapproving stares of stern father figures with a sweetly herbal mix of gin, lime juice, simple syrup and soda.

Cook Time:

Prep Time:

Total Time:

Servings: 1

Ingredients:

1/2 ounce fresh lime juice

Dash simple syrup

1 1/2 ounce gin (Plymouth or Beefeater is the tradition here)

Soda water

Preparation:

Squeeze the lime juice directly into a highball glass full of ice, then pour in the gin and simple syrup, filling the glass the rest of the way with the soda. Every sip ought to take you farther away from the stale jokes and stilted performances in the telecast.
