Few thought this translation of Kathryn Stockett's 2009 novel to the big screen would be tapped for an Oscar, but apparently the subject matter appealed to the Academy and it takes its place beside this year's motley mix of nominees. Set as it is in the deep south, only one drink could fit the bill. The Mint Julep is as southern as it gets, the bourbon's rich oaky sweetness mingling with the added kick of the mint and sugar and taking one back to lazy days on the porch, even though you generally do your own housework.

Cook Time:

Prep Time:

Total Time:

Servings: 1

Ingredients:

1 ounce simple syrup

Crushed ice

2 ounce quality bourbon

Fresh mint sprigs

Preparation:

Add a few mint leaves to the bottom of a glass along with some crushed ice. Muddle the leaves with a muddler (or the back of a spoon if you're not feeling all fancy-like) and then fill the glass the rest of the way with crushed ice. Add the bourbon and simple syrup and stir gently to combine. Then sit down and watch the Oscar telecast like it was a warm summer's day just floating by. After all, with Billy Crystal at the helm for the umpteenth time it'll feel like time is standing still.
