A dad in the U.K. was left disgusted after his toddler son almost ate chicken bites bought from budget supermarket Aldi, which were infested with maggots.

Jamie Molyneux, 20, made the stomach-churning discovery as he prepared his son's lunch after purchasing the 59-piece snack last week.

He poured the "ready to eat" chicken bites onto a tray and handed them to 16-month-old Oscar before noticing black marks on the food at the last second.

On closer inspection, Molyneux realized the rotten chicken was covered in maggots as well as mold, leaving him feeling "sick to the stomach."

He has since complained to Aldi, which has offered him 20 pounds (approx. $25) compensation and an apology for "any distress caused."

But the factory worker has slammed the supermarket for selling "dangerous" food and vowed to never shop there again.

“I was disgusted, I could not believe it," Molyneux, of Wrexham, North Wales, said. “I would not like to think of what could potentially happen to any child who ate them. When I opened the packet they smelt funny but I didn’t think anything of it because they don’t smell great anyway."

“I poured them out onto the tray and he was about to eat them when I noticed the black bits and the maggot so I pulled the tray off him straight away," he said. “It made me feel sick. The smell coming off them and the maggots, it turned my stomach, it’s really bad. I’m just glad he hadn’t eaten any before we realized."

"He was lucky I didn’t give him the bag as we are trying to teach him how to feed himself. I wouldn’t like to think what could have happened," he said. “We’d never had an issue with the store before. I complained to Aldi and said I really was not happy, but they only offered us 20 pounds compensation, that’s all they were going to do."

“I called Aldi and they were trying to say there had been a hole in the packet but I know there wasn’t," Molyneux said. “We usually shop there every week but we won’t be going there again. Make sure you check what you are giving your child. At the end of the day, it’s dangerous. You don’t expect something like this to happen to you. You expect to get good quality food.”

A spokesman for Aldi said: “Despite the comprehensive quality checks our supplier has in place, incidents like this can occasionally occur as a result of damage to the packaging, resulting in the product being exposed to air."

“We have apologized to Mr. Molyneux for any distress this has caused.”
