They say that sex sells. And for author E.L. James, it really sells.

The British writer of the massively popular "50 Shades of Grey" trilogy was ranked by Forbes magazine this week as the top-earning author of 2013. Her haul so far? A cool $95 million.

Forbes says the figures are based on "sales data, published figures and information from industry sources between June 2012 and June 2013."

James' place atop list puts her ahead of authors including Stephen King, Danielle Steel and Janet Evanovich.

Others making the list included James Patterson ($91 million),  Suzanne Collins ($55 million), Bill O'Reilly ($28 million), Danielle Steel ($26 million) and Jeff Kinney ($24 million).
