Fans of the Corvette Stingray could be in for a shock.

General Motors has trademarked the name E-Ray, suggesting that an electrified version of the iconic sports car is in the works.

Automotive spy photographer Chris Doane first uncovered the filing for “Corvette E-Ray,” which was registered on December 16 for use with automobiles.

GM also trademarked the standalone “E-Ray” name.

The automaker has not confirmed it its working on either an electric or hybrid version of the Corvette, but Doane previously photographed a prototype undergoing testing that is rumored to be a mid-engine Chevrolet sports car. Such a layout could better accommodate a battery-powered drivetrain than the current front-engine Corvette.

Automakers often file trademarks protectively with no immediate plans to use them. However, with the growing number of electrified sports cars on offer, like the Porsche 918 Spyder and BMW i8, along with the unveiling of the $400,000 GT from arch-rival Ford, it’s possible that a Chevy concept wearing the E-Ray name could be making a buzz soon.
