Drive-thrus, hedgehogs, the references are endless.

Chevrolet has announced that it is naming its upcoming, made-in-Michigan subcompact the Sonic.

As a replacement for the South Korean-built Aveo - a moniker that GM President Mark Reuss says people had difficulty pronouncing - the all-new Sonic will slot in under the new Cruze in Chevy's lineup and compete against the likes of the Ford Fiesta and Hyundai Accent.

Details on the U.S. version of the vehicle will be revealed at the 2011 Detroit International Auto Show in January, but the European edition that was revealed at the 2010 Paris Auto Show - still called Aveo - is slightly larger than the current Aveo found in American showrooms and has a dramatically overhauled interior, both in design and quality.

The most powerful engine available there is a 115 hp four-cylinder and we probably won't see much more power here. So don't expect to see a SuperSonic special edition anytime soon, at least not one with a little irony as standard equipment.
