Iranian president meets with Raúl and Fidel Castro during stop in Havana

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met in Havana with Cuban President Raúl Castro on Monday in a closed-door session that produced several collaboration agreements.

While the issues discussed where not disclosed, Reuters reported that officials of both countries signed accords regarding health, education and science, as well as a memorandum of understanding on banking.

In an unusual occurrence, Rouhani met separately with former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who at 90 years old rarely receives visitors.

According to Granma, the official newspaper of the island nation's Communist Party, the elder Castro and Rouhani agreed “on the importance of food production in a world threatened by climate change, the incessant growth of the global population and the dangers to the preservation of peace."

"Fidel and Hassan Rouhani concluded the friendly meeting with the most sincere desire for collaboration between the peoples of Iran and Cuba," the paper reported.

Iran's president came to the Caribbean nation after attending a Non-Aligned Movement summit in Venezuela, which is Cuba's main commercial and political partner.
