KABUL, Afghanistan --

Simeen Barakzai ended her hunger strike on Wednesday after a direct appeal by Subghatullah Mujaddedi, one of the country's most revered elders who also served as the head of the upper house of parliament and briefly as president in 1992.

On the 18th day of her hunger strike, Mujaddedi fed Barakzai three sips of soup, as her father, brothers and Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak looked on.

Barakzai had vowed to not eat or drink until the government investigates what she said was vote fraud during last year's parliament elections that cost her her seat in the legislature.
