GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Famed Israeli musician Daniel Barenboim and his orchestra have performed in Gaza in solidarity with its Palestinian residents.
Barenboim briefly entered Gaza on Tuesday and conducted two pieces by Mozart before a small audience. International performances are rare in Gaza.
Barenboim, born in Argentina, grew up in Israel. His pro-Palestinian activism has made him both friends and enemies among Israelis.
Also, he enraged some Israelis in 2001 by performing music by Richard Wagner, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's favorite composer, despite a ban on Wagner's music out of respect to Israel's Holocaust survivors.
