Student killed in shooting at Savannah State University

A Savannah State University student who was shot near the university’s student union died early Friday, according to a university statement.

Christopher Starks, a 22-year-old junior at the Georgia college, died at a local hospital, according to the statement. He was shot during an alternation at the student union building Thursday night. He was the only victim in the attack, the statement said.

There have been no arrests made in the shooting. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the ongoing investigation with assistance from the Savannah State University Police Department. Police have yet to identify a suspect.

The statement said Friday’s classes will be delayed until 10 a.m. and that grief counselors will be on camps.

“The safety of those who live, study, work and visit Savannah State University remains a top priority - no exceptions,” the statement said. “Savannah State University has zero tolerance for violence of any kind. If students are aware of the presence of weapons, please think and act responsibly to disclose such information to a member of the faculty, staff or administration, or other figure of authority.”

The school was placed on a lockdown for approximately an hour beginning at around 11 p.m. Thursday. WJCL reported university and local police were searching vehicles as they left campus. WTOC reported that identification was being checked at the campus entrance. Residential students were encouraged to stay in place as the investigation into the shooting continues.

Established in 1890, Savannah State is a historically black university with a total enrollment of approximately 5,000 students.
