The sister of a New York woman who disappeared Sunday night reportedly said she received a text message from her sister’s phone stating, "The girl with this phone is dead."

NBC 4 New York reported that Rajwinder Kaur's sister, Gurpreet, said when she first received the message she "thought it was probably a joke." But later, came to the realization that her sister would not send that sort of message.

The station reported that police tracked Kaur's phone to Brooklyn and at some point it was turned off. Sources told the station that she sold family possessions on eBay before disappearing.

Kaur, 26, disappeared Sunday night on her way to volunteer at a homeless shelter. Her family has posted fliers around the neighborhood and near places where Kaur volunteered in Brooklyn. The family is offering a $1,000 reward for information.

She is described by police as Indian, 5'3" tall, 130 lbs., with a thin build and medium complexion.
