The body of a UCLA graduate student who disappeared while hiking earlier this month was found Saturday, The Los Angeles Times reported on Monday.

Michael David Meyers, 25, was found buried under an avalanche of snow in an area about 200 miles north of Los Angeles known as the John Muir Wilderness. He suffered massive injuries, including broken bones, Inyo County Sheriff William Lutze said.

“It’s like being in a head-on accident at 100 mph,” Lutze told the Times.

Meyers, a Minnesota native who was studying physics, hadn’t been heard from since he texted a roommate on Nov. 5.

Avalanches are not unusual in the area, according to the Times.

“We join together in offering our deepest condolences to all of Michael’s family and friends,” UCLA said in a statement.
